Anis - Health SbAT
Anis’s career goal is to ultimately become a surgeon. As part of her VCE program at Northern Bay College she elected to do a school based traineeship to ensure that this pathway is right for her and to get hands on experience. Anis and St John of God Geelong Hospital are delighted that she decided to do so.
Anis is currently undertaking a school based traineeship with Gforce Strategies 4 Excellence in Certificate III in Health Services Assistance. She attends The Gordon City campus on Wednesday afternoons where she studies subjects such as Medical Terminology, First Aid and Infection Control. On Mondays, Anis attends paid work at the Day Stay facility of St John of God Hospital in Myers Street, Geelong.
She is even more motivated towards her career goal now which will continue with a degree in medicine. The placement at SJGGH has given her a very broad experience of a health career and in particular working in a hospital where she undertakes many varied tasks which include refreshment preparation, ensuring patients are comfortable before and after procedures, providing blankets and pillows etc. Anis has become a valuable member of the team and also assists with clerical work at times. She communicates well with the patients and all the nursing staff in Day Stay. Anis also enjoys her theory at the Gordon, who have “wonderful and helpful trainers”.
Hosting Anis and other trainees from Gforce Strategies 4 Excellence has been a very positive experience for the hospital according to Dinie MacRae, Learning & Development Manager. Dinie explained that the hospital hosts school based trainees to create opportunities for secondary school children in our local community who may be considering a career in health care, whilst gaining the experience of working in an acute health care environment.
The placement for an entire school year embeds the trainee into a team and gives them a unique experience, allowing skills and relationships to develop. It works particularly well for trainees like Anis who are highly motivated. Anis’s direct supervisor Mick McMahon said it is an honour to host Anis this year. We are all excited to see where her career will take her!
